Abstract

El suelo tiene casi una ilimitada capacidad para aceptar grandes cantidades de residuos, actuando como un sistema depurador natural que retiene desde bacterias hasta partículas en suspensión de cierto tamaño. Además, puede inmovilizar a los iones aportados al formarse complejos con los coloides minerales y orgánicos del mismo. Sin embargo, existe la posibilidad de que esos residuos destruyan la calidad de la tierra y la del agua, por tanto la aplicación de residuos al suelo debe plantearse teniendo en cuenta la compleja interacción dentro del sistema residuo-suelo y la de los procesos naturales que intervienen. Como un primer paso para evitar ese deterioro es indispensable estudiar la conveniencia, a nivel local, de la aplicación de residuos, para lo que debe generarse información básica sobre la zona el suelo y el material residual que permita identificar las limitaciones del empleo de estos residuos.
