Abstract

[EN] We evaluated the effect of three taxonomic groups of Epichloë endophytes (M1, M2 and M3) in the production of the alkaloid lolitrem B (toxic to mammals) and peramine (insecticide) in Lolium perenne. The content of lolitrem B and peramine was analyzed by HPLC in 91 infected plants. Lolitrem B was detected in 63.7% of the samples with mean concentrations of 0.31 to 1.16 μg g-1. Peramine was found in the 80% of plants (ranging from 2.62 to 11.43 μg g-1). There was a significant effect (P<0.0001) of the taxonomic group of Epichloë on the alkaloid production in L. perenne plants. The samples with M3 endophytes had the highest content of lolitrem B (up to 2.61 μg g-1). The maximum production of peramine was detected in plants infected by M2 strains (maximum of 24.0 μg g-1). In plants infected with M1 strains, the concentrations of both alkaloids were widely variable. Regardless of the origin of the plants, the endophyte taxonomical group is a key factor for the production and concentration of the alkaloid analyzed.
