Numerosas flotas pesqueras, entre ellas la española, mantienen en la plataforma costera de Namibia importantes pesquerías comerciales que son de gran importancia económica. Los análisis de stocks de las poblaciones afectadas realizados por la ICSEAF (International Commission for the Southeast Atlantic Fisheries) ponen de manifiesto que este recurso no es inagotable, y que no se puede incrementar indefinidamente el esfuerzo de pesca.
