Los artrópodos (del griego ἄρθρον, arthron, articulación, y podos, pie) son el filo más diverso de los metazoos (animales pluricelulares), con más de un millón de especies descritas. Incluyen, entre otros grupos, a las arañas, insectos, crustáceos y miriápodos. Son animales segmentados, y se caracterizan por poseer un esqueleto externo articulado compuesto de quitina, con apéndices con musculatura propia en posición ventrolateral, pareados en cada uno de los segmentos. Al ser rígido este exoesqueleto no permite el crecimiento, que se realiza mediante mudas –es decir, se desecha el exoesqueleto que se ha quedado pe- queño, y se forma otro adecuado al mayor tamaño del individuo en crecimiento.
