La tradición europea de poner en música las "siete palabras de Cristo en la cruz", u otros tantos comentarios sobre las mismas, se remonta al siglo XVI y pervive hasta el XX. La ejecución de este género de composiciones se inscribía en ceremonias paralitúrgicas que, denominadas "Sermón de las Siete Palabras" y organizadas por hermandades y cofradías, solían desarrollarse entre la mañana y la primera hora de la tarde del Viernes Santo.
