Abstract

El botulismo aviar es una intoxicación que las aves adquieren al ingerir una neurotoxina (BONTC) producida por la bacteria Clostridium botulinum tipo C y caracterizada por una parálisis muscular ascendente. Esta intoxicación causa mortalidades masivas de aves acuáticas en humedales de todo el mundo en verano y otoño. Su epidemiología se caracteriza por el ciclo «cadáver-larva de mosca». C. botulinum crece sobre cadáveres generando toxina, las aves sanas ingieren larvas de mosca que han acumulado toxina botulinica sobre cadáveres de aves muertas, como consecuencia las aves mueren y proporcionan más sustrato para que se desarrolle más bacteria, toxina y larvas. En la Mancha Húmeda, desde 1978, se han registrado 20 brotes de botulismo aviar, durante los que se han recogido aproximadamente 22.000 aves muertas o enfermas. Se ha observado que estos brotes ocurren frecuentemente en humedales abastecidos con aguas residuales tratadas, por lo que nos planteamos si esta práctica puede favorecer la presencia de C. botulinum en el medio y/o la aparición de brotes de botulismo. Con el objetivo de identificar si existe relación entre la aparición de brotes de botulismo y el abastecimiento de humedales con aguas residuales urbanas, se compararon datos físico-químicos de agua y sedimentos y se hicieron análisis microbiológicos de patógenos aviares y C. botulinum tipo C de muestras ambientales de tres humedales con diferente riesgo de contaminación por aguas residuales. Los resultados indican que existen diferencias en los parámetros físico-químicos y microbiológicos entre los humedales estudiados y que la entrada de aguas residuales urbanas puede aumentar el riesgo de botulismo aviar en los humedales.
