Abstract

En el contexto de la formación del ejército español para la lucha en la Guerra contra la Convención (1793-1795), el empleo de tropas reclutadas por los nobles ha sido poco tenido en cuenta hasta ahora, aunque tuvieron su papel dentro del desarrollo militar del conflicto. Además, este papel pone de manifiesto un esquema institucional de recursos de un Estado en el que todavía encajaban los grandes. En concreto, el estudio del caso del Regimiento de Voluntarios de Castilla, reclutado a sus expensas por el XIII Duque del Infantado nos muestra, por un lado, que la aristocracia todavía tenía vocación militar con las miras puestas en las recompensas políticas correspondientes, y por otro lado, las enormes dificultades que tuvo este señor para el reclutamiento de la clase de tropa, que permiten ver, desde la óptica señorial, cómo no era tan unánime ni popular la adhesión al conflicto como la historiografía tradicional ha mantenido.

Este trabajo se enmarca dentro del proyecto de investigación dirigido por el profesor Enrique Martínez Ruiz, que lleva el título «Seguridad y cuerpos de seguridad en la España del siglo XVIII», financiado por el Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología y con número de proyecto BHA 2001-1451.
