El Canal Medio-Oceánico de Vidal (Atlantico Occidental-Ecuatorial): características morfológica y sísmicas

Abstract

Datos de batimetría multi-haz, sonografías del fondo, y perfiles de sísmica de alta y muy alta resolución han permitido reconstruir en detalle el curso completo del Canal de Vidal, un canal medio-oceánico de 930 km de longitud situado en la Llanura Abisal de Demerara, en el Altlántico Ecuatorial. En base a diferencias en su trayectoria, el curso completo del Canal Medio-Oceánico de Vidal se ha dividido en cuatro sectores morfológicos principales: a) el sector rectilíneo Sur, de unos 210 km de longitud y dirección 110º N; b) el sector sinuoso de 500 km de longitud, en el que el canal sufre cambios bruscos en su trazado debido a la presencia de gran número de montañas y relieves submarinos que fuerzan al canal a cambiar de dirección; c) el sector rectilíneo Norte, más distal, orientado N-S y de 250 km de longitud; y d) el sector plano al Norte de la Llanura Abisal de Barracuda, donde se localiza la desembocadura del Canal de Vidal. El relieve del Canal de Vidal varía entre 100 y 250 m, su anchura entre 4 y 10 km, y la pendiente media en el eje del canal entre 0,01º y 0,04º. La historia geológica del Canal de Vidal parece estar influida por la actividad tectónica relacionada con la Dorsal Medio-Atlántica y zonas de fractura adyacentes. Sin embargo, a lo largo de su curso el Canal de Vidal no muestra cambios en su carácter sedimentario que puedan relacionarse con actividad tectónica diferencial. El curso completo del canal muestra evidencias de una intensa actividad erosional, y el fondo del mismo está cubierto únicamente por un depósito residual de granulometría gruesa y de alta reflectividad acústica. La ausencia de depósitos de relleno a lo largo del canal permite deducir la intensa actividad de las corrientes profundas en esta zona del Océano Atlántico
