La "reforma" militar del Marqués de la Ensenada

Abstract

En 1749 el marqués de la Ensenada emprendió una profunda reforma del ejército que supuso una reducción del 20% de los efectivos totales, justo en una coyuntura en la que como consecuencia de dos operaciones de ventas de empleos de los años precedentes se había incrementado mucho el cuerpo de oficiales. Sin embargo, el objetivo principal de su reforma fueron los privilegiados cuerpos de las Guardias Reales que sufrieron una reducción de más del 50% de sus tropas, en especial, las Guardias de Corps, el cuerpo más aristocrático. Además, Ensenada trató de restar poder a las Guardias Reales al hacer depender por completo de la vía de la Secretaría del Despacho de Guerra a unos cuerpos que hasta ese momento habían gozado de plena autonomía. En 1751, en su famosa Representación, trató de volver al orden que él mismo había quebrado dos años antes. Tras su salida del poder en 1754 se inició en el ejército una «contrarreforma» militar.
