La producción de objetos y valores científicos: tecnología, gobierno e ilustración

Abstract

Realidad y naturaleza no son la misma cosa. El propósito de este artículo es mostrar cómo emergió la primera durante el siglo XVIII. Utilizando los conocidos casos de la figura de nuestro planeta, las polémicas sobre las cinchonas del Perú y el catastro de Ensenada se explica cómo la Tierra, la quina y España se convierten en objetos experimentales y técnicamente determinados. El conjunto de tales objetos conforman la realidad, un entorno artificial construido mediante una panoplia de dispositivos técnicos (instrumentos, tablas, protocolos y nomenclaturas) de carácter público y, por tanto, consensuado. Se aboga por la tesis que entiende los instrumentos como extensiones de nuestra sensibilidad y se subraya la necesidad de cuestionar la habitual, infundada y extrema separación que nuestra cultura hace entre lo natural y lo artificial. El texto subraya las ventajas de esta perspectiva para el abordaje de los conflictos contemporáneos en torno a la gestión del patrimonio natural/cultural.
