Abstract

Nuestra política exterior del siglo XVIII se inscribe en un concierto internacional volátil (el del “balance of powers”) y precisa adaptarse al gran conflicto por la hegemonía entre Gran Bretaña y Francia. Baja estas coordenadas, se muestra homogénea, aunque con matices, y creemos, entre ellos, que existe afinidad entre el programa y la práctica diplomática de Carvajal y Floridablanca. Pensados y aplicados en tiempos y circunstancias dispares, comparten una voluntad de salvaguarda que, desde la defensa de la paz y el equilibrio así como del regenerador reformismo interior, permita desplegar una acción exterior más nacional: menos distante de Londres, más autónoma de Versalles y más libre de potenciales conflictos secundarios (Portugal, Italia, centro y este de Europa). Entre las “diplomacias posibles” de la época, ésta parece, a pesar de sus limitaciones y riesgos, la más adecuada, aunque, en el fondo, se encontraba también sujeta a las contradicciones del Antiguo Régimen.
