Abstract

[EN]: The building interpreted as Curia ordinis in Carthago Nova’s forum is one of the most representative of the colony’s public architecture. Its typology, its prominent location in the court area and the singularity and dimension of its marble decorations can be set forth, along with others, as arguments in favour of this identification. The new appraisal of the marble facings and the structure, however, suggests a date for its construction in the 1st century AD, the product of the reform of a preceding building, the date and function of which remain unknown. In consequence, we are unaware of the seat of the local senate between the colonial deductio and the late 1st century, when the new building was erected. The new building, the main hall of which we may imagine to be presided over by an imperial statue, was used by the decuriones until at least the mid 2nd century AD, when the colony fell into decline and the building was abandoned and robbed out.
