This paper sets forth the lack of Arabic documental sources for the study of the trades or professions of slaves in Al- Andalus, especially in order to undertake a systematic survey of the different occupations that an individual could have depending on his status of freedom or slavery. This work is structured in two parts, the first of them dedicated to slaves in rural environments, and the second to the information about slaves in urban spaces. Arabic sources of different genres are used to pursue these aims, with special attention to legal texts, the literature that, in general terms, can be considered as the richest in information about slavery.
