María Tudor y "los orígenes de la leyenda negra" en Inglaterra

Abstract

El presente artículo repasa las principales elaboraciones que han abastecido la representación de María Tudor, poniendo especial énfasis en el análisis de sus conexiones con el amplio imaginario antiespañol. Durante los siglos XVI y XVII la imagen sanguinaria de María Tudor y la influencia ejercida sobre su reinado por la sombra de Felipe II serán recurrentes en el pensamiento inglés, mientras que quedarán completamente enmudecidos en las obras de los principales autores de la leyenda negra antiespañola en el resto del continente. Será a finales del siglo XVII e inicios del siglo XVIII con el empuje dado por la Ilustración al debate sobre la tolerancia religiosa y con el progresivo liderazgo que asumirá Inglaterra en el acecho y crítica de la imagen de España que la figura de María Tudor se insertará dentro del imaginario antiespañol más allá de las Islas Británicas.

La presente comunicación ha sido posible gracias a los proyectos de investigación «Las fronteras entre lectura legítima y lectura prohibida en la España moderna» [MCyT/BHA2001, director: Ricardo García Cárcel] y «La recepción del hispanismo moderno europeo y americano en España» [CEHI03/06 director: Bernat Hernández], así como a la realización de una estancia financiada por la Generalitat de Catalunya en el Queen Mary College y el Institute of Historical Research de Londres entre los meses de marzo y mayo de 2004, bajo el auspicio del profesor Felipe Fernández-Armesto.
