A lo largo de todos estos años de experimentación, la siembra directa ha demostrado en todo momento una mayor capacidad para almacenar agua en el suelo. Esta acumulación se debe a la presencia de residuos de cosecha en superficie permitiendo una mayor infiltración y una menor evaporación y escorrentía del agua de lluvia. Con el fin de potenciar el carácter mitigador del cambio climático de la siembra directa, resulta fundamental el mantenimiento de esta técnica a lo largo del tiempo y conseguir así las mayores tasas de reducción de los gases causantes del calentamiento global.
