La Península Ibérica y las Islas Baleares suponen un centro de biodiversidad vegetal de gran importancia en la biogeografía del extremo occidental de Eurasia. En este libro se analizan y discuten los registros paleobotánicos para los últimos cinco millones de años de cambio ambiental, incluyendo estudios sobre polen y carbón fósil, restos macroscópicos preservados y otros microfósiles de importancia en la reconstrucción de ecosistemas pretéritos. La utilidad de este conocimiento excede su ámbito temático y alcanza la biología de la conservación y la gestión del patrimonio natural.
