Abstract

The excursion organized by the Soil Societies o, Spain and Portugal will begin In Madrid on September 18th and end In Lisbon on September 29. The itinerary has been chosen so as to combine the touristic attractions with the scientific interests of the places visited and field examinations will be made of the most characteristic landscapes and sails of the Mediterranean areas. Although of necessity, of the excursion will be a long one and no time will be left to study the typical landscapes and soils of the semidesert regions of the Peninsula which are situated in the South East and middies valley of the river Ebro. of the area we shall visit, the minimum rainfall ¡s lo be found on the Spanish Meseta with a precipitation in the order of 450 mm; in the remaining areas of the excursion there is a slight increase in precipitation which exceeds 1,000 mm in the Sevilla and Huelva sierras, These will be covered on the 7th day 01 the excursion. Although the ground lo be covered 15 extensive, the daily itineraries will never exceed 250 Kms , except for the first stage, Madrid-Bailen, (330 Kms . ) for this reason only three profiles will be examined here . The Spanish par! o, the excursion will be somewhat concentrated upon the middle and lower valleys o, the river Guadalquivir, which although an Atlantic rival"" gives us, because of its climate characteristics and soils I the best possible picture of the Mediterranean regions. With the exception of the peculiar beauty al the semidesert Mediterranean regions we shall study, among others, the extensive plains of the Spanish Meseta, the wide Andalusia valley the Karst landscape (probably one of the best of Its kind in Europe) I the alluvial plains end the mountain ranges with a climate translation and almost' trebled rainfall . Thus we shall have displayed before us an extensive range 01 Mediterranean soils, with the red soils being eh le' represented. In our extensive Travel throughout South Western Spain we shall cross three large geographic-geological units: La Mancha, Sierra Morena and the Andalusian Depression; these units could be further subdivided and it would be possible to give a detailed description o, the subdivisions but Ih15 is beyond the scope of this guide. But perhaps we ought to mention that between Madrid and Santa Cruz de Mudela (where the crossing of the Sierra Morena is begun) we shall cover part of The Tagus valley until reaching Toledo and this will be followed by the Toledo and Ciudad Real Manchas with geological characteristics we shall give below. We shall cross Sierra Morena, between Santa Cruz de Mudela and Guarromán (about 60 Kms.). at the Despeñaperros pass and leaving the Meseta we shall enter the Andalusian depression, cross the Guadalquivir valley and pass on lo the Andalusian ranges (Alpine type) I lo finally stop at !he fool of Sierra Nevada, in Granada. A great part if the radial itineraries from Seville will be along territories in the Guadalquivir valley but before concluding the excursion and entering Portugal we shall revisit the Sierra Morena area.
