La costa gallega se encuentra tapizada de forma discontínua por material sedimentario, preferentemente de origen continental, que fosiliza formas litorales antiguas. La forma irregular de la costa y la presencia de sierras litorales, con altitudes en torno a los 600 m, ha favorecido que durante el Pleistoceno Final, se haya desarrollado un ambiente morfogenético dominado por procesos fríos.
