Abstract

[EN] This paper discusses the conditions of settlement and the organization of the Syrian jund-s which came to al-Andalus in the middle of the II/VIII century. Deployed as collectors of taxes in several administrative provinces, these jund-s acquired a position of military and political power during the critica1 years which preceded the arrival of the first Umayyad emir to al-Andalus. As a consequence of this, 'Ahd al-Rahman 1 had to face the opposition of some memhers of the jund who resisted his attempts to control these important military units. However, in the long run the Umayyads gained the upper hand as it is reflected by the organization of tbe Syrians during the Umayyad period which is hased on the muqata'a system.
