Abstract

[EN]: In this paper we offer a preliminary study of archacological research in the fortified settlement of Castejón de las Merchanas (Don Benito, Badajoz). This work is part of a research program focused on the Romanization process in Peninsular south-west, particularly in the Serena region and the middle Guadiana Basin. Within this critical period of historical change, the study of fortified scttlements has been a distinguished field of activity, dealing with thc knowledge of their structure, morphology, material asscmblages and their territorial context. In this framework the choice of Merchanas as a place of special interest is justified by its strategic loeation and complex physiognomy. We present a brief description of its internal structure, architectural planning and building techniques. According to our stratigraphic record and the analysis of finds in the site, a chronological scquence and a functional interpretation of the site are proposed. This overview is completed with data provided by the systematic surface survey of the arca around the site.
