Epigenética, envejecimiento y cáncer

Abstract

La epigenética se refiere a mecanismos moleculares que modulan la función de los genes sin alterar la secuencia del DNA. Los procesos epigenéticos son fundamentales para establecer los programas de expresión génica durante la diferenciación celular y el desarrollo ontogénico. Además de estos cambios epigenéticos, los organismos pueden acumular alteraciones epigenéticas con el tiempo. Estas alteraciones dependen de factores genéticos y ambientales, y podrían estar asociadas con enfermedades dependientes de la edad. Algunos de los ejemplos mejor conocidos en relación al aparato respiratorio incluyen las alteraciones asociadas a la exposición al humo del tabaco y su relación con cáncer de pulmón y las alteraciones epigenéticas asociadas con asma y rinitis alérgica estacional.

Resumen del trabajo presentado al XX Congreso Sociedad Asturiana de Patología del Aparato Respiratorio, celebrado en Oviedo (España) el 12 al 13 de marzo de 2015.
