¿Crisis o anarquía? La corte francesa en vísperas de las guerras de religión (1559-1562) vista por el embajador español

Abstract

La derrota ante los españoles en las largas “guerras de Italia” debilitó notablemente a Francia, y la nobleza estaba profundamente dividida por la penetración del calvinismo. Un testigo privilegiado de este periodo de inestabilidad es el embajador Tomás Perrenot, señor de Chantonnay, quien informaba periódicamente al monarca de la grave crisis a la que se enfrentaba Francia, y que se agudizaría a la muerte de Enrique II. Chantonnay consideraba que para fortalecer la autoridad monárquica, era necesario sofocar la herejía que estaba erosionando el poder real, y que llevaba a antagonismos en el seno de la misma corte. Esa sensación de anarquía se desprende con nitidez al revisar las cartas que, casi diariamente, le enviaba el embajador a Felipe II y que hoy se conservan en el Archivo General de Simancas. Los informes de riñas al interior de los templos, de la presencia de predicadores protestantes en el propio palacio real y de los desórdenes callejeros que se producían en diversas ciudades de Francia, dan cuenta de un reino al borde de la guerra civil, a pesar de la política conciliadora de la reina. El embajador español se dio cuenta de la tensión del ambiente, y que cualquier incidente, por trivial que fuese, podía tener consecuencias funestas.
