Sustentar a Inquisição com rendimentos eclesiásticos: uma aproximação ao tema (séculos XVI-XVIII)

Abstract

Este trabalho, desenvolvido no âmbito de um projecto de doutoramento mais amplo, tem como objectivo analisar as razões que levaram a coroa portuguesa a consignar ao tribunal da Inquisição rendimentos com origem nos bens da Igreja. Far-se-á uma tentativa de contribuir para desmistificar a ideia que a actividade persecutória do Santo Ofício era a principal fonte de financiamento desta instituição. Por um lado, analisar-se-á o processo que levou à aplicação destas rendas à Inquisição e, por outro, tentar-se-á perceber qual o papel que estes réditos desempenhavam no cômputo global das receitas auferidas por cada um dos tribunais metropolitanos portugueses: Coimbra, Évora e Lisboa. Para além disso, dar-se-á atenção a alguns momentos de maior conflito/resistência dos cabidos no pagamento destes novos direitos à Inquisição. No final, conclui-se que os rendimentos eclesiásticos, a par dos dinheiros entregues aos tribunais com origem nos bens confiscados e da tença do tabaco, constituíam os pilares financeiros do Santo Ofício português, ainda que de forma diferenciada nas três mesas inquisitoriais em apreço.
