Los usos de los atributos de la bruja como medio de resistencia a la justicia: el escandaloso caso de Baza de 1752

Abstract

Tras la normativa aprobada por el Santo Oficio en 1614 que protegía al acusado de brujería de una posible muerte en la hoguera a falta de pruebas fehacientes e irrefutables de vuelos, trato con el demonio e incluso cópula con el mismo, el delito de brujería, que ya era tratado previamente con gran escepticismo por la Inquisición, encontró en la legalidad una legitimación mayor. Algunos miembros de la población andaluza del siglo XVIII supieron utilizar en su favor el calificativo de “bruja” así como algunos de sus atributos con finalidades muy diversas, entre ellas, beneficiarse del indulgente trato inquisitorial frente al civil, mucho más severo. Así ocurrió con las mujeres implicadas en el caso del robo y cruel asesinato de un niño en Baza en 1752. Josefa Romero, Bernarda Vizcaíno, María Antonia Moreno, Antonia Guillén, Manuelilla la gitana y María Josefa Tudela se atribuyeron algunos de los signos y prácticas propias de la brujería (vuelos, reuniones, unciones de ungüentos etc.) durante los interrogatorios a los que fueron sometidas, como táctica de resistencia a las iniciales acusaciones de asesinato de una justicia civil. Esta manera de redirigir sus causas entre una u otra justicia, este modo de aplicar el imaginario brujeril a los relatos de los sucesos juzgados, este rol activo de las hechiceras a través de sus discursos frente al quehacer institucional ¿supuso un medio de resistencia eficaz de una minoría débil a través del uso de lo mágico?
