[EN]: The relationship of the Universities with the social and economic environment and their role in the innovating process has been treated with more goodwill than true knowledge of the phenomenon whereby, in the majority of those countries “imitating” this trend, the advances achieved by the universities in this field have been, generally speaking, small. This text analyses how the situations that arise with regards to the relationship University/Industry may vary and clarifies the framework within which they work. The starting point of this framework is the functional grouping of those elements that intervene in the processes of innovation in a series of scientific environments, such as technological, financial, production and consumer circles. Likewise, a description is given of the inter-related structures, emphasising the outstanding importance of the power of articulation and the dynamic capacity these give to the surrounding elements, in order to review finally the strategies for a possible working basis and the factors required to guarantee it being implemented.

[ES]: Las relaciones de las universidades con el entorno socioeconómico y su papel en el proceso innovador ha sido tratado con más voluntarismo que conocimiento del fenómeno, de allí que en la mayoría de los países “imitadores” los logros obtenidos por las universidades en este campo han sido, en general, pequeños. En el texto se muestra un análisis de la variabilidad de las situaciones que se presentan en las relaciones universidad-empresa y se expone el marco en el que estas operan. Dicho marco parte de una agrupación funcional de elementos que intervienen en los procesos innovativos en una serie de entornos, a saber, los entornos científico, tecnológico, financiero, productivo y de usuarios. Se describen, igualmente, las estructuras de interrelación poniendo de relieve su poder de articulación y capacidad de dinamización que estas proporcionan a los elementos de los diferentes entornos para, finalmente, pasar revista de las posibles estrategias de funcionamiento y los factores que condicionan su desempeño
