A hombros de gigantes: la Casa de Bascuas (Arzúa) y su relación con la vieja nobleza medieval de Galicia (siglos XV-XVI)

Abstract

Como en otras muchas situaciones constatadas por la bibliografía, la nueva hornada de nobles gallegos conocida como fidalguía o hidalguía, se formó en numerosas ocasiones a la sombra de la vieja nobleza medieval, que había perdido pujanza en los primeros compases de la Edad Moderna, debilitada por la Revuelta Irmandiña. Andado el tiempo, el absentismo de los viejos linajes favoreció la irrupción de los nuevos, impulsados por su intervención en el mercado de la tierra, una exitosa reproducción social y el progresivo control del poder local. El ejemplo que presentamos, extraído de nuestras investigaciones con fondos privados de la baja nobleza del noroeste peninsular, viene a confirmar estas antiguas trabazones y pone de relieve el elevado grado de movilidad de la sociedad gallega del momento, del que la hidalguía fue claro paradigma.

Este trabajo se inscribe en el marco del proyecto “El monte comunal en Galicia desde comienzos de la Edad Moderna a la actualidad: de soporte de un viejo complejo agrario a recurso medioambiental y patrimonio paisajístico, código: HAR2014-52667-R”, financiado por el Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad.
