Química, toxicología y nanociencia

Abstract

La toxicología es un área multidisciplinar e interdisciplinar de investigación. El objetivo último de la toxicología se ubica en la escala atómica y molecular; es decir, entender el efecto tóxico de sustancias químicas en base al conocimiento de su estructura a nivel molecular; así como la relación entre estructura y toxicidad. Aunque en los últimos tiempos se han hecho grandes avances en toxicología molecular, aún queda mucho por descubrir. Un mayor conocimiento en este campo facilitará la evaluación del impacto de xenobióticos sobre el ser humano, animales, plantas y ecosistemas. También, progresos en esta investigación permitirá predecir resultados, lo que servirá de guía en el diseño de nuevas sustancias químicas con potencial comercial. En las últimas décadas estamos observando avances considerables en nanociencia y sus aplicaciones, la nanotecnología, que pueden suponer una revolución industrial (y por lo tanto, social). Así, cada día están apareciendo en el mercado nuevos productos fabricados con nanomateriales, de los que no se han hecho evaluaciones toxicológicas; en parte, debido a la dificultad de obtener resultados fiables sobre este tipo de materiales, pues las evaluaciones toxicológicas en este campo son muy complicadas. En esta conferencia se abordarán las relaciones entre la química, la toxicología y la nanociencia con el objetivo de presentar progresos en el campo emergente de la nanotoxicología.
