Irrigation project hydrosalinity model

Abstract

One approach of studying water and salinity management in an irrigation project is to utilize computer simulation models. This paper describes a conceptual hydrosalinity model that will be calibrated and validated with data obtained from the 5,400 ha Violada Irrigation Project that is served by the Monegros Canal in the Ebro River Basin. The calibrated and validated model will then be used to evaluate the impacts of present as well as alternative future latid and water resource management in the volume and salt concentration in the irrígation return flow. Since salt loadings from irrigation projects appear to have a significant effect on the rising salinity of the Ebro River System, this modeling effort will contribute towards the wise aud judicious management of water and latid resources in this basin. The hydrosalinity model presented is a modifícation of an irrigation project model developed and tested in two irrigation projects in California. Modifications were necessary to fit more closely to the prevailing hydrologic and salinity conditions in the Ebro River Basin. Improvements were also made for better considerations of initial and final stored soil water, the contributions of gypsum to salt loadings, and addition of rim inflows from adjacent hydrologic systems. This paper presents a brief literature review of previous hydrosalinity modeling efforts, description of the hydrologic and salinity submodels, required input data and model coefficients, listing of output data, and a general discussion of the potential utility of this model. This model was programmed in BASIC Language on a small Hewlitt-packard computer, an 112-85 with 32K of random access memory (RAM).
