Abstract

El Nitrógeno ocupa una posición destacada entre los elementos esenciales para el crecimiento y desarrollo de las plantas, dados los altos requerimientos, que de él, presentan la mayoría de los cultivos. Es un componente integral de numerosos compuestos - clorofila, enzimas, proteinas estructurales, aminoacidos, etc - fundamentales, todos ellos, en los procesos de crecimiento de las plantas. Los cultivos responden rápidamente ante una adecuada disponibilidad de N en el suelo, manifestándose, entre otros, en altos rendimientos de producción, intenso color verde de las hojas y un buen llenado del grano en cereales (Brady,1990). Con anterioridad a 1945, debido al alto coste de los fertilizantes nitrogenados y a su difícil acceso, los agricultores dependían, en cuanto a suministro de N, casi enteramente de la capacidad biológica de fijación de N de los suelos y del uso tradicional de estercolados y restos de podas.
