Abstract

En las úl timas décadas el desarrollo de la agricul tura ha supuesto grandes progresos con el consiguiente incremento en la producción y aumento en el rendimiento. La mecanización, ingieneria genética y uso de fertilizantes fundamentalmente nitrogenados lo han hecho posible. Sin embargo, el uso excesivo e incorrecto de fertilizantes puede ocasionar graves problemas en el medio ambiente (Bergstrom, 1987; Addiscott, 1991). En el suelo influye modificando el pH, la estructura y por tanto su ecosistema (Pinck, 1985). El agua, factor primordial del medio ambiente, también se ve afectada por este motivo (Duynisveld, 1988; Rossi et al., 1991). La contaminación de las aguas subterráneas y superficiales es cada vez mayor. Las fuentes principales de esta contaminación son por una parte las actividades de origen industrial y urbano, que provocan una contaminación puntual y localizada en áreas concretas, y por otra parte una contaminación dispersa debida a la actividad agricola (ITG, 1990).
