La fruticultura israelí cuenta con remotos precedentes. La Biblia y la tradición judía refieren numerosos pasajes de la relación entre el pueblo judío, la tierra de Israel y sus frutos. E! vino, dátiles, higos, granadas y olivas pertenecen a las siete cosechas principales de las tierras bíblicas. En el Deuteronomio VIII, 8, se califica a Israel de "tierra de trigo y cebada, vinos, higueras y granados; una tierra de olivos y miel».· Los tiempos han cambiado y aunque se siguen cultivando todos estos frutos, otros muchos han venido a sumarse a la relación bíblica de las cosechas de Israel.
