Coleccionismo extravagante: "monstruos", "fenómenos", "portentos" y sus imágenes en las Cortes de la Edad Moderna

Abstract

Dentro del conjunto de los denominados “hombres de placer”, personajes que entretenían a reyes y cortesanos durante la Edad Moderna, un grupo minoritario fue el de los fenómenos, portentos o monstruos. Aunque algunos permanecían de forma estable en las cortes, en la mayoría de los casos su estancia en palacio era breve, justo el tiempo de satisfacer la curiosidad de los cortesanos, tan propia de la época, que obedecía a un interés -en parte científico, en parte morboso- por lo diferente, lo imposible, lo nuevo o lo exótico, que surge durante el Renacimiento y dio lugar a los Gabinetes de Curiosidades o Cámaras de Maravillas (Wünderkammern en Alemania). Las muchas imágenes de estos personajes “monstruosos”, con las que se quería dejar constancia de su rareza, hacen que puedan considerarse parte de ese coleccionismo extravagante que mostraron muchos monarcas y nobles de la época.
