Juan de Borja y los origenes de la reforma católica en la corte del emperador Rodolfo II

Abstract

El estudio aborda el papel de Juan de Borja, embajador español en la corte del emperador Rodolfo II a finales de los años setenta del siglo XVI, con respecto a la reforma católica en los países de la monarquía de los Habsburgo. Asimismo, el estudio presta atención a la influencia de las ideas del Concilio del Trento y a la estrategia del embajador para impulsar la política española en la corte imperial. Así, extrae las consecuencias de la actuación de Borja sobre Rodolfo II en la esfera confesional. El estudio evalúa también el papel de la emperatriz María de Austria en este proceso. Juan de Borja contribuyó a configurar la reforma católica en los países centroeuropeos de los Habsburgo. Impulsó la política religiosa del emperador y se involucró activamente en el esfuerzo de renovación, para recuperar el terreno perdido por los católicos en Europa Central. Juan, como hijo de Francisco de Borja, tercer general de jesuitas, tuvo una relación especialmente estrecha con el entorno de la Compañía de Jesús
