Un contratiempo inesperado: el expansionismo de Toyotomi a finales del siglo XVI

Abstract

Con la muerte de Oda Nobunaga a manos de Akechi Mitsuhide y el ascenso de Hideyoshi Toyotomi, hasta entonces general del primero, el panorama militar del Pacífico cambió profundamente. Hideyoshi, que disponía de un inmenso número de militares a los que acababa de someter, pensó en proyectar las fronteras de Japón más allá de las islas del Sol naciente. Así, de un lado, mantendría ocupada a toda esta amalgama de samuráis potencialmente problemáticos, y del otro, sofocaba el ardor de sus ínfulas megalomaniacas. China, la perla de Asia, la tierra de fantasía que narrara Marco Polo, sería su objetivo primordial, pero antes de atacar las fronteras del imperio Ming Toyotomi tanteó las opciones de colaboración con la Corea de los Joseon. La península, sin embargo, mucho más cercana a la cultura China, se negaría a la colaboración armada. Los japoneses, pues, prepararon una flota de conquista justo en el momento que comenzaron a mantener relaciones diplomáticas con los españoles, generando una zozobra política que alteraría la tranquilidad de todo un continente
