Micro-organism that can convert ellagic acid and ellagitannins into urolithins and use of same

Abstract

[EN] The invention relates to the identification, for the first time, of micro-organisms of human gastrointestinal origin, that can produce urolithins, to methods for producing said compounds, to the use of said compounds thus produced in the production of food formulations, pharmaceutical formulations, dietary or food supplements and functional foods, to the production of probiotic compositions by means of the incorporation of urolithin-producing micro-organisms, and to a method for the isolation, detection and quantification of urolithin-producing micro-organisms, based on the use of a DNA fragment that can specifically detect the urolithin-producing micro-organisms.
