Se describen las principales geoformas volcánicas y la revolución que ha supuesto la introducción de los Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG) en su modelado morfométrico. Esta información resulta clave a la hora de reconstruir la historia geológica de un área volcánica y de los procesos involucrados. Los resultados obtenidos son de aplicación directa en la gestión preventiva de la peligrosidad volcánica en un área determinada. Además, en el caso de una erupción volcánica, ayudan a dimensionar los efectos de la erupción y a gestionar más eficazmente los peligros y riesgos asociados.
