Abstract

[EN] The production of polyploid varieties of sugar beet in Spain was initiated in 1954 and the first triploids were ohtained in 1.959. A series of national and foreign varieties and selected plant families were used for the work. The most efficient technique for tht induction of polyploidy was found to be the immersion of seeds in a 0.2 or 0.3 per cent coichicine solution for three hours. The best tetraploids obtained proceeded the selections made of diploid material adaptéd to the conditions of plant cultivation. of the country. These tetraploids formed the basic material for the production of the new commercial anisoploid varieties, which in this moment are in the stage of multiplication The appearance of aneuploid plants in relatively high proportions represent a problem for breeding polyploid beets, which is now under investigation.
