La saga del “cachirulo”

Abstract

El Triticale fue concebido, valga la palabra, en unas conversaciones sostenidas en la Estación Experimental de Aula Dei, con ocasión de la visita que en 1949 realizó a dicha Estación el profesor danés C. A. J ORGENSEN, bajo cuya dirección se han formado varios de los genéticos y mejoradores de plantas de mayor renombre actual. En las conversaciones tomábamos parte, además del profesor JORGENSEN, el doctor JOE HIN TJIO, que organizaba por aquel entonces el Departamento de Citogenética de Aula Dei, y el que firma estas líneas. En aquellas conversaciones se sometían a la crÍtica del profesor JORGENSEN los primeros planes de trabajo del naciente Departamento de Mejora de Plantas de Aula Dei.

Tenemos ya una hectárea en pleno espigado, su aspecto es espléndido, y ahora que vamos a tratar de su difusión en el medio agrícola e industrial español parece apropiado volver la vista atrás para resumir en unas líneas la historia de su obtención. Me estoy refiriendo al "Cachirulo", nombre con el que hemos bautizado al primer Triticale español.

Uno de los proyectos que teníamos en cartera era el de intentar obtener un Triticale (anfidiploide de trigo y centeno) para las tierras centeneras aragonesas. Este Triticale tenía que reunir la rusticidad del centeno con la calidad harino-panadera del trigo.
