Abstract

Los polinomios de Zernike (PZ) son de gran utilidad en la óptica, porque forman una base ortogonal completa en un círculo de radio unidad. Debido a que muchos instrumentos ópticos tienen una simetría circular y pupilas circulares, la expansión en PZ se puede utilizar para describir cualquier función en el plano de la pupila, en particular, la fase del frente de onda o aberración de onda. Por ello tienen mucho interés en aplicaciones como el diseño óptico [1], medidas de calidad óptica [2], sensores de frente de onda [3,4,5], óptica adaptativa [6,7], interferometría [9,10,11], metrología de superficie (profilometría, topografía) [12, 13] y óptica atmosférica [14] entre otros. La descripción modal en base a PZs ha tenido mucho éxito en todos estos campos de aplicación. Hoy en día los polinomios de Zernike están presentes en tecnologías actuales usadas en oftalmología, telescopios, software de diseño y simulación óptica, etc. A pesar de la importancia de la base de los polinomios de Zernike, ésta presenta varios inconvenientes en aplicaciones prácticas. El problema más importante es que en aplicaciones reales no se usan los polinomios en forma analítica sino versiones discretas dado que se trabaja con redes de muestreo (cuadradas, exagonales, etc.) Una vez muestreados. La base de PZs pierde sus dos propiedades más importantes, es decir deja de ser completa y ortogonal. Otro problema adicional es que en muchas aplicaciones se basan en reconstruir el frente de onda integrando a partir de las derivadas parciales de los PZs, pero las derivadas parciales discretas tampoco son completas ni ortogonales.
