Más allá de la producción de alimentos: los huertos familiares como reservorios de diversidad biocultural

Abstract

Desde medianos del siglo pasado, la pérdida de la diversidad agrícola también ha conllevado la pérdida de diversidad cultural. En este artículo analizamos cómo los huertos familiares del Pirineo catalán han actuado como reservorios tanto de diversidad genética (de plantas alimentarias, ornamentales, y medicinales) como de conocimientos asociados a esta diversidad (conocimientos que incluyen, por ejemplo, información sobre el calendario de siembra y recogida de cultivos y que se manifiestan en refranes o prácticas concretas). Los huertos familiares son también un marcador de identidad cultural, ya que su mantenimiento está motivado más con la manera de vivir de las personas que con los beneficios económicos que reportan. Estos son también un importante elemento de estructuración social, ya que el intercambio de semillas y productos de los huertos contribuyen a crear tejido social. Nuestros casos de estudios sugieren que los huertos familiares contribuyen a la conservación de la diversidad biocultural en sociedades industrializadas. No obstante se requieren cambios estructurales profundos y apoyo institucional a la agricultura local para garantizar la subsistencia de estos reservorios de naturaleza y cultura.
