Abstract

La utilización del maíz como forraje ha impulsado de manera creciente el interés hacia el conocimiento de su producción de biomasa, junto con el de su calidad nutritiva. El objetivo fundamental de la producción de forrajes es obtener las mayores cantidades y calidades de materia seca por unidad de superficie. Ello hace necesario considerar la influencia de los diferentes factores genéticos y ambientales de las variedades cultivadas. Se considera muy interesante conocer la acción relativa de los diferentes factores que afectan a la producción de materia seca forrajera en variedades locales de maíz lo que ha producido un alto grado de adaptación de las mismas. También es de gran interés estimar las relaciones entre caracteres morfológicos y fenológicos con otros de producción de biomasa. La consideración conjunta de estas cuestiones permite identificar variedades locales de maíz, adaptadas a nuestras condiciones agroecológicas, que tras sucesivos ciclos de mejora intrapoblacional, sean adecuadas para su explotación forrajera.
