[EN] Several cases of juntional epidermolysis bullosa with epitheliogenesis imperfecta have been diagnosed in newborn Churra lambs from three flocks. At birth, affected lambs showed areas or the skin devoted of epidermis, seen as marked reddened areas of the dermis, surrounded by normal skin. Lesions were more commonly seen in the head, together with malformations of the auricular cartilage, and in the limbs. Furthermore, in the oral cavity the epithelium was normally formed but easily detached from the underlying tissue. Pedigree analysis showed an autosomal recessive inheritance. Pathological and immunohistochemical studies have demonstrated a deficiency in integrin 4 protein, normally present in the hemidesmosomes attaching the epidermis to the dermis. The condition diagnosed in these lambs has not been previously seen in ruminants or other any species and resembles the disease of humans known as “epidermolysis bullosa with pyloric atresia” although the latter is not a prominent pathological feature in lambs.
