Desde el inicio de la expansión colonial en Marruecos, los arabistas universitarios españoles, aquellos cuyo campo de estudio se centraba principalmente en el pasado arabo-islámico de la Península Ibérica, evitaron implicarse de manera directa en ella, al contrario de lo que hicieron los llamados africanistas, cuya labor estuvo estrechamente vinculada al colonialismo.
