Abstract

[EN] A supercontinuum light source is a wideband source obtained as the result of the broadening of a spectrally narrow pump source in a nonlinear medium. Supercontinuum generation in optical fibers and waveguides has attracted considerable research interest in the last years, basically thanks to the development of special optical fibres with high nonlinear coefficient and tailored dispersion properties (namely photonic crystal fibers and tapered fibres) and the development of ultrashort laser technology. In this thesis, an extremely simple experimental method to generate a supercontinuum source with a continuous-wave pump and a suitable single-mode optical fibre is described. With this experimental configuration it is possible to obtain supercontinuum sources with a good stability and a high power spectral density. Starting from the basic knowledge of non linear effects that take place into the fibre, a theoretical explanation of the process that result in the supercontinuum source has been done. A mathematical simulation of all the process has also been developed. Applications of SC generation in optical fibres can now be found in fields such as Optical Communications, Optical Frequency Metrology, Spectroscopy and Optical Coherence Tomography. In this thesis, the viability of some of these applications is experimentally demonstrated.
