Abstract

[EN] Throughout geological times the Earth has undergone a lot of natural climate changes, affecting different regions of the planet in different ways. Since human intervention over the last decades has emerged as a new factor of climate change, in order to predict the evolution of the Earth’s climate in a near future it is necessary to know and to quantify what part of the climate variability is due to natural reasons and which is caused by human activities. It needs a deep knowledge of natural forcing mechanisms, the pace at which they act and the effect that they provoke under different conditions, which are determined to a great extent by the regional characteristics of a certain zone. From this approach, this chapter is addressed to the climate evolution of Galicia at different time scales based on sedimentary marine records. In a first step, glacial-interglacial cycles prevailing over the last 2.6 million years have been examined in order to depict the general context. Later, abrupt climate changes occurring during the last glaciation have been analyzed, as well their possible causes and their consequences for our region. Finally the chapter addresses the record and impacts of Holocene climate fluctuations in Galicia
