Abstract

[EN] After having defined the different ways in which water can be retained by coals, a revision is made on the present ideas about the ultrafine structure of coals, those deduced from the porosity measures and the inside surface of pores and capillaries. A new formula is deduced relating the capillary radius to the relative moisture of the gaseous phase on the balance of capillary condensation. Some new ideas are shown m the paper on the interpretation of the adsorption isotherms and, mainly, of the hysteresis which is very sharp when water is employed as an adsorbate. After a brief exposition of the various methods proposed to determine the moisture, it is also shown the possibility to utilize this easier parameter, substituting the calorific value, for an international classification of those coals containing more than 30% of volatile matters, being this applied to a set of 77 samples of Spanish coals of different crucible swelling index and a volatile matters content that ranges from 30,37 to 56,12 per cent.
