The main characteristics of the refractory’s used in coke ovens plants are described. Due to the fact that in most of the new modems plants the ovens and flues are built in silica, the author devotes a more detailed study to this materials, as-its knowledge is of great importance to understand its behaviour. Attention is paid to the semi-silica bricks used in all the other important parts of the plants. Data on the bricks that have been' tested by the author and on some others mentioned in foreign bibliography are included as well as the, main specifications concerning to set forth and to stop a plant are given.
