El sistema pelágico del golfo de Nicoya y río Tempisque (Costa Rica)

Abstract

El Golfo de Nicoya es un estuario tropical situado en la costa pacífica de Costa Rica. A finales de julio y principios de agosto, durante la estación lluviosa, se realizó una campaña en dos condiciones de marea, (vaciante y llenante), analizándose temperatura, salinidad, irradiancia, turbidez, Eh, OD (oxígeno disuelto), CDOM (materia orgánica disuelta coloreada), nutrientes (NO–2, NO–3, NH+4 , SiO2 y PO3– 4 ), fracciones de clorofila y abundancia y composición del microplancton. La columna de agua presentaba estratificación, analizándose las diferencias entre la capa profunda y la más superficial. La combinación de imágenes de satélite y el análisis espacial de distribución de nutrientes sugiere que la peculiar riqueza en biomasa de la zona, más allá de aportes de los ríos, está ligada a la activa hidrodinámica y mezcla de aguas marinas. Se ha realizado un análisis del ambiente lumínico, turbidez y CDOM en la columna de agua como factores clave explicando la producción primaria, encontrándose un claro gradiente Mar-Río. Se han identificado un total de 75 taxones de microplancton. El grupo más abundante del sector más marino son diatomeas céntricas. El análisis de presencia de clorofila b, indicador de influencias continentales, y su confirmación por microscopía, revela la presencia de clorofíceas en el sector más fluvial, especialmente en vaciante. El estuario se revela como una zona muy productiva y muy activa hidrodinámicamente. Se sugiere potenciar el futuro estudio de la hidrodinámica y su conexión con los procesos de producción en el sistema pelágico y la distribución de fracciones planctónicas.
