Abstract

[EN] This text we will review the past and present state of the research concerning the Porluguese-Chinese relations between c. 1513-1514 (when the Portuguese landed for the first time at the Chinese province of Guangdong) and 1644 (fall of the Ming dynasty). The analysis will be focused on the two main branches which tend to organise the historic and geographical studies about these matters: the studies about Macao and those about the wider fíeld of the bilateral relations between Portugal and China. Although special attention will be paid to Portuguese and Macanese authors, references will be made to all those other authors - Western or Chinese - whose contribution is judged to be relevant to the progress of both these research fíelds. The text begins with a brief introduction to the specifíc qualities reached by this kind of studies in the Portuguese cultural context and to the main agents involved in that practice during the last 500 years or so. Modern Sinology can only by understood after taking into consideration those 16th and early 17th century Portuguese texts about China that lie as its roots. So, at the end the main publications related to the disclosure and the critical study of these sources will be presented.
