Abstract

En la actualidad los problemas medioambientales son un tema de interés tanto social como científico, pues afectan a campos como la sanidad o la economía. La emisión de sustancias contaminantes es, por lo tanto, un problema que debe solventarse. En el presente caso la investigación está enfocada a la eliminación de tolueno como contaminante. El tolueno se engloba dentro de los llamados VOCs (“volatile organic compounds”) y es uno de los contaminantes urbanos más característicos, derivado fundamentalmente del tráfico de vehículos. El uso de catalizadores en la industria que favorezcan la eliminación de determinadas sustancias aparece como una de las vías más eficaces para resolver muchos de los problemas asociados a la contaminación. Concretamente, la fotocatálisis es una técnica de oxidación muy estudiada en los últimos años para la eliminación o transformación de muchos de estos contaminantes orgánicos. En este caso concreto se busca conseguir la oxidación total del tolueno a CO2, por lo que este trabajo se centrará en la búsqueda de un fotocatalizador idóneo para conseguir esta mineralización completa1.
